I have been through an insufferable number of calls with Verizon "customer service" and found them to be consistently incompetent although occasionally pleasant. I had FIOS installed with the promise that my home phone number that I've had for more than 20 years would remain my number.
They can't seem to make that happen (it has been more than a month), and they all assign the responsibility to another department. I don't know that I've been routed to all of Verizon's call centers, but I must be getting close.
They are far better at selling than servicing. I didn't think it was possible for me to long for a return to Comcast .
